Can you imagine a world where people drive beautiful and unusual cars, created by designers prodigiously endowed with talent and imagination?
Names like Preston Tucker, Carl Borgward and John DeLorean are hardly known today. Nevertheless, today’s cars would be a lot different without their contributions to automotive engineering. Although the car is a technological and rational affair, it’s the dreamers and eccentrics like these who have made the biggest contribution to the development of the industry; those who have had the ability to think beyond their time and conventions. Money doesn’t drive progress in the car business – it is a passion for speed, and an obsession with mechanisms. Yet for many a dreamer, this passion has ended in fiasco. Misunderstood and pushed aside by their contemporaries, they have been forced to watch their dreams trampled underfoot.
This book takes a look at the history of the car from a different angle, avoiding the mainstream moguls and telling a story about a man and his dream, and the like-minded people that came before and after him. Lavishly illustrated and intensively researched, it documents the making of some of the strangest and greatest cars of the past century. The main section is devoted to the unsung heroes of motoring, and the rest of the book shines a light on the many ingenious inventions we now take for granted.
Let’s show some respect to the dreamers. Our world wouldn’t be so exciting without them.

I read this on my kindle after seeing a Tucker in the Gilmore Museum. I ended up liking the book so much I bought the hard copy for my dad's birthday. Lots of really interesting stories about big automotive dreamers and every day innovators. The editing wasn't the best, but overall I would recommend this book as a good way to blow a couple of Sunday afternoons.

Preston Tucker Others Tales of Brilliant Automotive Innovators Innovations Arvid Linde eBook Reviews
I bought this for a student who doesn't like to read, but loves cars. He read this book cover to cover, and was really excited about sharing what he learned while reading it! Thanks to this book, he wants to become and automechanic.
We were pleased with the book .Nicely sealed.I'm giving it as present. It arrived in the time frame which was stated.Thanks.
Preston Tucker is the topic of only 1 of 13 of this book. It is an odd collection of chapters on various men in the history of the auto industry, mainly European. The selection process seems random. It’s not clear who the audience is for this book. I’m not in it.
The title is, if not somewhat misleading, applicable only up through page 111; I see the remaining text as an attempt to flesh out what otherwise would be too few pages to constitute anything like what is called to mind by the word "book". These first pages are interesting and entertaining if a bit light on detail and depth; a tease that leaves you wanting to know a lot more. The book opens with DeLorean's story and the format chosen for this episode is unique; the author recreates what might have happened in the form of what amounts to a script. To his credit, it is entertaining but one questions the accuracy (no foot notes; little citing of sources). From there on the author adopts a more conventional approach, which is fine.
The fleshing out or padding begins by lamenting the loss of England's automotive industry as a whole (complete with the author's personal analysis of its downfall) and goes on to include for example, waxing sentimental over the Rover SD-1, which by the way, though significant, is anything but "British design at its finest" (designer David Bache admited to having lifted the theme straight off a '68 Ferrari Daytona and stretching it to accommodate 4dr architecture). The padding concludes with what is little more than a cataloging of major automotive innovations. This is not without interest but I would have much preferred to see the author develop his information on the innovators he chose to include and if not, then to expand coverage to include a few more of the many he does not acknowledge.
The discount price of £14/$29 is still a lot to pay for a 150-page 6"x9" paperback in which about half of the printable area is dedicated to photographs, nice though they are. The price becomes ridiculous when considering that it is really only the first 111 pages (minus 7 for the usual copyright info, contents, fly pages, etc.) that are likely to correspond to what might initially prompt someone to buy this book. Having said that, the printing quality is high but the book shows evidence of not having been thoroughly proof read; there are many (especially in the latter sections of the book) not-so-insignificant errors that have found their way into the final printed edition; possibly an issue if English is not your first language.
Ignoring the price, I would give the first 100-odd pages 4 stars; considering the price and padding, I'll give it 2 stars.
There was only a small section on Tucker. Dissapointed
Great deal, fast shipping, NO problems!
This book is about all the dreamers who wanted to mass produce motor cars with their personal stamp on the cars. well worth a read
