The history that you think you know and that which was taught in school is not necessarily history as it transpired. Many events and characters in American history have been misrepresented, in classrooms, books, films, and folklore over the years until they have reached the point where they are accepted as true despite the fact that they are not. In other cases, events and actions have simply been overlooked or ignored, and events and characters are judged not by who or what they really were, but by the myths that now surround them. Often these misconceptions are based on political realities, and equally often many are ignored because of their potential disruptions to the overall American myth. Here are 10 examples of either unknown or misunderstood facts in American history.

Lies My Teacher Told Me What Your American History Teacher Got Wrong eBook Sarah Barker Reviews
Interesting stories _ but very short book
This book is a fascinating look at what we believe to be true about history. You will be surprised by the truth. A good read!
As a former history and English teacher, I appreciated the honest approach to the facts. Rather than diminish our history, I believe the truth actually helps our understanding of the past.
Literature can and does frame and perpetuate the myths. Think of the poem by Longfellow. Thus getting the facts out is even more important.
Interesting in part but I already knew many of the facts revealed in this book.
This isn't a bad book. It's a short book, and if you're reasonably informed, there's probably very little here you didn't already know. It might make a useful gift to a naïve teenager who's reading one of those dreadful high school history books. It's certainly nowhere near as commendable as the gold standard "People's History of the United States."
I finished reading this in about 15 or 20 minutes. Almost every one of the pieces of information I have seen elsewhere.
Much of the information is good, but I feel incomplete and casts a negative slant. Based on the title, one would assume this to be the case, and the remainder of the book follows through. Instead of further delving into history, and looking at the views of the time, information is disseminated based on the mores and social aspect of the time in which the book is printed rather than the time of the history. The Edison information was interesting and added more to my understanding of Tesla as well, however.
Eh. I'd stick with James Lowen's work.
